  1. The 955 has had a hard life. Hasn't seen a lot in the last 5 years but in the 90's it copped a flogging. Crack looks like it has been there a while going off the gunk that had worked its way into it.

The 855, well that was originally my brothers frame and he has always been heavy on his bike. the issue with his is mainly the swingarm, so I should be able to make a good frameset from the two, but I would imagine if mine had problems, his could be a major issue waiting to happen.

The 955 will go to grip sport for repairs eventually.

I'm pretty upset though, the bike felt so nice to ride and I really felt like I was on a bike that was made for me. Obviously it was embarrassed by me and sacrificed itself to save face.

  2. Bugger about the crack. That one on ebay looks alright. Not sure why he had carbon fibre on the ad though??

    Posted 11 months ago # | | | | |
  3. I'm guessing it was a cut and paste mistake. His other add is a carbon drive side crank.

Frame looks good, its just big. It has the same seat tube measurement as my frames, just 10mm longer in the top tube. Hopefully I can offset it with a short stem, if not I will be making G ride a real bike.

  5. Pft!

sounds to me like someone is looking forward to the prospect of riding a real classic bike.

Only 6.5 hours till I know if it is mine or not.

  6. Nooooooooo, outbid. The search continues.

I'll be cleaning the frame up on the weekend and taking photos to send to grip, so that may be an option.

    Posted 11 months ago # | | | | |
  7. Someone was keen! (not me BTW - I'm still banking on getting a carbon one.)

  8. <blockquote...cleaning the frame up on the weekend and taking photos to send to grip, so that may be an option.

that'll cost you well more than the lousy $41 that frame went for!

  9. yeah but the frame on ebay was a "Way Big" sized frame where as I really need a medium. If it were a medium, or even a large, I would have gone all out.

Speaking of which, the bike mafia has come through with the goods and I have located a "still in the bubble wrap" 857 frame, medium size, with spare swingarm, bushes and other bits that the owner will sell to me.

Just need final approval tonight and I am on the trails again

  10. Hey, how did you find the crack - obviously you were looking for at the frame, but was there any other indication? I have a hell of a creak in my jekyll at the moment and I can't find it's source. I have essentially stripped the bike and grease everything there is to be greased but it persists... I know there is the occasional noise from the seatpost/seat but that's because I have to run several hundred feet of seat post due to being built like a giant preying mantis.

I thought I had found a crack near the headtube but after sanding back the paint it seems to be okay and anyway the noise seems to be coming from somewhere near the bottom bracket as far as I can tell, but that all looks okay. A bit of a mystery really. Might have to be a trip to the LBS.

  11. You would know, creaks on a proflex, particulalry the 95 model "World Cup Design" frames means nothing. I once heard it said not to be worried until these frames stopped creaking.

I'll post a pic of the crack over the weekend, but I wasn't looking for one. I was cleaning the bike and getting years of accumulated crap off the BB/pivot mount area. If it weren't for crap in the crack, I probably would not have noticed it.

Not that it matters, I'll get it fixed and in the mean time I have this to occupy me.

As I will now have three frames, but four swingarms, I am going to get a disc mount welded onto one of the new swingarms. Once that is done, the new bike gets built up with all the parts of my current XC bike.

  12. Noice, very noice.

Had I known that the ebay one just gone was a "way big" I could have bought it and sent you my front triangle which is just a large...

    Posted 11 months ago # | | | | |
  13. Well, the one I got is a medium. Perfect size for me.

Getting Disc tab on the rear and there is plans on the proflex forum to convert the pivot to a sealed bearing system, while decreasing flex at the pivots. Might look into that as well for the swingarm with the disc tab.

  14. Here we go, some pics of the2010 Proflex's.

I'd love to get my hands on the 790 at the top of the article.

  15. Probably the one in the second photo for me - or the carbon jobbie. I wouldn't be saying no to that.

  16. Bit of a Proflex update from my part of the world, what an exciting few weeks its been.

Just as I was about to pay for the 856 above, this turned up on my doorstep, huge thanks to the guys from drift for helping in the search.

A brand spanking new (but 13 year old) Proflex 856. Plan is to build this up with full XTR, just need to get a disc brake tab added to my swingarm. Still waiting for the swingarm, but if it doesn't happen I will get one of the old ones done.

    The 856 Frame

The 855 and 856 showing how the frame evolved over the 2 years between them being produced. Not sure what I will do with the 855 when its fixed.

And just so I still have a retro ride, the 955 that needs to be repaired. There is a small 1-2mm crack in the weld between the BB and pivot mount. Should be easy enough to have repaired.

    Posted 10 months ago # | | | | |
  17. Today I followed up the 856 with another new (old) bike that will take a while to be built. I have always wanted one of these frames though and for $50 its worth a punt.

Meet my Proflex 854. 1994 model, second from the top of the range that year.

I can get new elastomers from Scotland for the front and rear ends, total of about $60, so the whole thing will set me back about $110. I have enough old school parts at home to do the rest.

This is your chance to get a carbon 5500. You know you want it, you know you need it. If you let this slip, then forever shall you regret it.

Face it, this bike will complete you.

  22. WooHoo, new swingarm for the 856. All for $40Us on ebay.

Once I get it, its off to Grip for a disc tab and then the great bike build begins. Shame its black as it kills my red/silver scheme, but I think I can work with black.

  23. Meet the new proflex in my shed.

Just need to put the cranks on (XTR m970) with an MRP1.X guide so I am going 1x9.

Waiting for the postie to return my new swingarm is taking forever. Hopefully today or tomorrow so it can ride on the weekend.

  24. It took long enough, but finally the bike is complete. Pretty happy with how it has turned out, but I haven't had a chance to get out for a spin yet, that will happen on Australia Day.

The disc tab that Grip put on is a work of art (well I think so). It looks like it has always been there.

    A few photos though.....

  26. And it rides as good as it looks, just needs a better pilot.

    Posted 7 months ago # | | | | |
  27. Ride was good.

I need to sort the pivot bolt to stop it coming loose. I know what I need to do though. Took me a little bit to work out why the backend felt funny halfway around thelap.

Pressure in the shock needs to be sorted too. It's down to 70psi but the backend is probably still a bit too firm.

    The 1x9 though is great.
