I'd read that before somewhere.
You'd have to be **** off if you were one of the guys with the super expensive road bikes being humbled by a mtb.
I'm guessing though that it was a pretty minor race and the field probably reflected that.

You'd have to be quite a lot fitter to overcome the disadvantages of a MTB c/f a roadie, in a road race. Kind of as daft as turning up to a XC race on a road bike, with Zipps.
That said, there are zillions of MTBers who would hose me in a road race when I am on a roadie and they on a MTB. Horses for courses, quite literally.

Funny! I know a few top MTBers that do road races but not on their hardtails! There was a guy that used to ride regularly with the Northern Suburbs bunch on Saturdays from St. Ives when I used to ride with when I lived over that way. Again he rode with slicks.
Another mate decided he'd do it too, he'd ride with a road bike normally in this bunch but decided to do it for a giggle, he reckons during one of the surges towards the final sprint section at Terrey Hills he got a dig in the ribs from someone. He wasn't quite sure who but it wasn't exactly friendly, funny how this kind of thing can upset people!
